The Tiniest Mistake Can Become The Worst Disaster : Confession Of A Shopaholic

SUMMARY>>
Rebecca Bloomwood receives her credit card bill, which was very high. Bloomwood tries to remember when she spent all of that money, while the reader ( me) figures out why the book was titled Confession Of A Shopaholic. Phillip- Rebecca's boss editor- tells her to got to a conference and on her way she stops by a store and sees a  E 120 scarf she decided she had to have it but doe snot have enough money. Bloowood goes to the conference make sup a lie about her "sick aunt" who is on her death bed. Luke Brandon - a company owner- gives her the rest of the money to get a "gift" for her aunt. Rebecca goes to buy the scarf and when she comes out of the store Luke Brandon is standing right there...... So all Luke Brandon did was ask if the scarf was for her aunt, of course she replied yes.
Later on that day she went to he parents house and started talking to the neighbors Janice and Martin Webster. They wanted to ask her if it was a good idea to change their insurance, she told them it was because there was guaranteed money but hesitated when letting them know..... Rebecca's roommate Suze's cousin wanted to go on a date with her and she agreed, but decides she was going to cancel, until she saw Tarquin in a magazine listed as the 15th richest man in London. They went on a date and all Rebecca could think about was what it would be like to be his wife. She made up a lie trying to bond with him. He left his check book on the table at some point in the date and ebecca opened it and searched it. Tarquin quickly ended the date.
Sometime after Rebecca and Tarquins date she felt horrible and went to her parent's house. Her parents asked her what was wrong ; instead of saying she was in debt and Derek Smeath( her bank manager) was calling her, mailing her and just trying to get her attention she said she had a stalker. Rebecca's parents told the neighbors and they all took it very seriously, suggesting to get a restraining order but Rebecca convinced them it was not that serious.
While Rebecca is visiting her parents she reads an interesting article on FlagStaff Life ( the insurance company she told Martin and Janice to leave), they were giving out windfalls ( a lump sum of money) to their long time customers but since Martin and Janice took Rebeccas advice in leaving they no longer qualified for the money. Rebecca found this very sneaky and not right, she decided to call up someone she met on the job at a conference and told him about the truth of finance. Eric Foreman ( the man Rebeca met) immediately asked her to write an article on Janice and Martins Story that would be published in the Daily World news paper.
Everyone has seen the article and feels bad for Janice and Martin, they also noticed Rebecca Bloomwood as an amazing writer. The Morning Coffee show called her up to ask if she would come on, explain Martin and Janice's situation. She agreed of course, once she got to the television station the producers told her there was a representative of FlagStaff Life that would be on the show, that rep. turned out to be Luke Brandon. Luke and Rebecca had a heated debate about the situation until he just agrees with her  and says he never knew about the arrangement of people loosing money. And for the first time Rebecca fely glorious and confident.

Morning Coffee  offered Rebecca a job on financial calls telling people how to handle their financial problems. The check she will be receiving for this was "mighty big" although the narrator does not give the reader this information. Rebecca is able to pay off all her debts.

QOUTE>>

This is what Rebecca tells a caller in debts who name is Fran.

" The first thing you've got to do is.... is be brave and confront the issue. Contact the bank and tell them you're having trouble managing."

" I know myself how hard it can be tackling this problem - but I can honestly tell you, running away doesn't solve anything. The longer you leave it, the worse it'll get." ( Kinsella Sophie, Confessions Of A Shopaholic, pg 283)

REACTION>>

Wow ! Throughout this entire book Rebecca has rally grown and learned a lot.
The advice she is giving to this lady is the advice she is giving to herself.
No she understands to stop running away from her financial problems and face her fears.
She is going to try to do the right thing and not make up a lie to get out of it.

Don't Hate The Player Hate The Game : 21: Bringing Down The House

21: Bringing The House, Ben Mezrich, 2002, Simon & Schuster.

In the opening of this book Kevin Lewis, the main character, asked

someone, Ben Mezrich the is author of the book, to write about his casino life

story. Kevin and his other friends in the MIT club decide to play Vegas by

card counting. To get ready for Vegas they played people from school and

they all called Them cheaters and the MIT club knew they were ready fro

Vegas. Everything is going well for the card counters Kevin is proud of

himself for being a more experienced and accomplished card counter, he

starts having flash backs of his past with family and confessing his "job" to his

dad. Lewis's dad did not accept what he was doing and wanted him to stop

but he continued to gamble anyway.

The MIT team made a plan to get more money out of the Casinos, the

workers at the Paradise in Nevada got suspicious of the group  they were

kicked out and not allowed to come back, the casino also told other casinos

about their suspicion. Nothing kept the club from the casinos because the

next week they back to another but Kevin decided it was to risky and they

should take a break. Behind Kevin's back the leader of the group Mickey

made a new team, Kevin created his own team too but when they tried the to

count cards they ended up getting their money stolen. After that they felt it

was quiting time.  But the book ends with Ben Mezrich and Kevin at the

casino about to get in trouble by the security but leave with Ben asking

Kevin if he missed counting cards.

"Kevin its a waste of time. Gamblers never win any money,"(Mezrich 96)

In this quotation Kevin is told his father what he has been doing with his

life, card counting (gambling), his dad does not approve and he disowned

him. This is most likely a important part of Kevin Lewis's life and affected the

way he would continue to live his life.
